So what are sunscreens and why should you use them?
Sunscreens are chemical agents that help to prevent the sun’s ultraviolet {UV} radiation from reaching the skin. There are two types of ultraviolet radiation that cause sun damage and skin aging: UVA, & UVB. While UVB rays are the chief culprit behind sunburns, UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply and are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and aging of skin.
An SPF - Sun Protection Factor- is a measure of the sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Or another way to look at this: SPF 30 blocks 97 percent, SPF 50 blocks 99 percent. But as you can see no sunscreen can block all UV rays. However, do not let this lull you into a false sense of protection, leading you to stay in the sun longer. UV rays from the sun damage the skin, so play it safe.
