Experience 17th - 19th-century plantation life and learn how they shaped the antebellum South by visiting one of the historically renowned plantations, located within a half-hour drive from downtown Charleston.
Middleton Place
This carefully preserved 18th-century plantation is designated as a National Historic Landmark and features 65 acres of America's oldest landscaped gardens laid out in 1741 by Henry Middleton, President of the First Continental Congress. House Museum tours highlight family collections and the role of the Middleton's in American history. Craftspeople in the Stableyards recreate the activities of a self-sustaining Lowcountry plantation.

Magnolia Plantation
This 17th-century estate, acquired in 1676 by the Drayton family, features America's oldest gardens (c. 1680), which bloom year-round and include one of the country's largest collections of camellias and azaleas. The plantation played important roles in the colonial settlement, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Attractions include the Pre-Revolutionary War plantation house, Biblical garden, antebellum cabin, nature train, nature boat, wildlife observation tower, gift shop and more. Leashed pets are welcome.

Drayton Hall
As the oldest unrestored plantation house in America open to the public, this National Historic Landmark built in 1738, showcases three centuries of American history and is one of the most important examples of Georgian architecture in the country. Beyond the house, activities include hourly tours and daily programs, a self-directed "Voices" Landscape Tour on DVD, self-guided river and marsh walks, A Sacred Place: The African-American Cemetery and an artisan-inspired museum shop.

Boone Hall Plantation
As the most photographed plantation in North America, Boone Hall reflects Southern heritage spanning 300 years on one magnificent "still working" plantation. Originally a cotton plantation covering 17,000 acres, this site has a magnificent live oak avenue, planted in 1743. Original plantation buildings include nine slave cabins and a gin house used to process cotton. A guided tour of the first floor of the mansion is available. The plantation also features gardens, plantation coach tours, live performances (in season), and a cafe.
